A song

Well, I've failed at updating this recently. I won't bother making excuses. At any rate, here's a poor quality video of me performing at an open mic in one of the dorms at my school. I'm pretty satisfied with how it went, given it was my first performance of this sort. I'll put up a higher quality audio version of this song eventually. (I would embed it, but then it starts playing automatically, which is undesirable.)

Two quick sketches

Below are two quick charcoal sketches that I did at the San Diego Zoo a few weeks ago. Sometimes I find that quick sketches can have a sort of fun, rough, expressive quality that more careful drawings may lose a little bit.

A window view

It seems that the surroundings of objects greatly influence how they are perceived. An object taken out of its normal context can seem very strange when it might normally be entirely unnoticed. The picture below, taken through a window in Oakland, contains objects no doubt intended for purposes of medical training. However, the scene does seem a little unusual without the usual users of the items, especially given their vaguely human form.

Tree

It's nice to be able to use my new pastels again. Below is a quick sketch I did outside this past weekend. It's an interesting challenge to try to express an object that has such fine details that it would be almost impossible to draw all of them.

Tea leaves

The human mind seems sometimes to impose order upon randomness. When looking at chaotically arranged items, one can sometimes subconsciously assemble them into a familiar object.

After drinking a cup of tea some time ago, I decided to play a bit with the leaves remaining in the bottom of my cup. Restricting myself to not touching the leaves directly, I moved them around using the small amount of remaining liquid.

Sometimes shaking the cup produced a familiar shape of some sort or another. Once I found an interesting shape, I shook the cup around carefully to make it resemble that shape slightly more. Below is one example of the result, but I will leave it to the reader to imagine what the leaves might remind them of.

An evening encounter

In my night travels many weeks ago, I came across a neglected creature. My companions and I searched for signs of its master, but the proud red beast appeared to have been left to fend for itself. The pitiful thing was disconnected from any energy source to help it to collect its dusty nourishment, and had only bushes and pavement for company. We wanted to care for it and take it home, but feared the wrath of its former master.

A quick sketch

Below is a quick charcoal sketch I did of my hand today. Using charcoal is kind of fun; pencil tends to be more precise, but larger drawings are much faster to do with charcoal.

SLAC Skies

I've been working at SLAC this summer. The place where I actually work is somewhat of an industrial pit, but the main SLAC campus is not without its nice scenery. The picture below is from a day when the skies were particularly nice.

A bit of music

I've been messing around with composing music in Ableton Live recently. Recording accoustic instruments, such as my guitar, is a little difficult at the moment due to the lack of privacy in my dorm living arrangements, thus this piece is all sampled instruments and synths. I hope you enjoy it.

A sketch

I'd like to start updating this slightly more often - we'll see how successful that is, though. Here's a quick sketch I did a while ago, or rather a part of it. I like the way that the paper grain can affect a sketch, though the effect is more noticeable in the full image.

Mexican landscape

I was in Tijuana for a few days during spring break building a house with some other Mudd students. This drawing is from a picture I took one morning. It was drawn about a month ago using a new set of pastels. Definitely much easier to blend colors than with my cheaper ones.

Just for fun

I took this picture while walking around tonight. It is the window of a costume store which is closing. Without the context of the store's other items, the heads seem more like bizarre hunting trophies than costume parts.

A Face

Well, I'll put this up for the sake of actually updating this. Pastels in my sketchbook.

Kitten

I guess I've neglected this blog for a while. I've been playing guitar more and drawing less recently. At any rate, here is a sketch I did recently of a friend's kitten. I must admit it is significantly less cute than the original subject.

Pencil Sketch

Here's a random sketch I did on Saturday.

New Pastels

Well, I got a few more cheap pastels. Didn't photograph exceptionally well, but I'm too lazy to scan it at the moment. Also, hair is hard.

Pastels...

This person is somewhat yellow, I'll pretend that was on purpose.

Tablet Experiment

I tried a style I haven't used before. The picture is supposed to vaguely resemble me.

A few recent sketches.

I have created this blog largely to encourage myself to draw or compose music. It's likely that it won't get updated much when schoolwork once again consumes my life. Currently, I still have a few sketches accumulated. Here are three.
